Jonah Fleeger is a ceramic artist originally from Northwest Indiana. Fleeger attended a small boarding school called Verde Valley School, in Sedona, Arizona, which is where his love for ceramics first started. In 2013, he received his BFA in ceramics from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating he moved into a studio at the Lillstreet art center in Chicago where he taught ceramics and made glazes for the department. Since then he has completed post-baccalaureate programs at The University of Colorado Boulder and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. In 2019, Fleeger received his MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design. After graduate school he was a resident artist at the Morean Center for Clay in Florida (2019-2020) and a resident artist at Cobb Mountain Art & Ecology Project in California (2020-2022). Kazuya Ishida is a ceramicist from Bizen, Japan, known for his work in traditional Bizen-style pottery. He was born into a family of potters in Bizen, which is one of the six 'ancient kilns' and is famous for its traditional unglazed, high temperature-fired pottery. Kazuya uses wood-fired noborigama (multiple chamber climbing kiln) and anagama (single chamber climbing kiln). He trained with Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure in Bizen for four years, followed by time spent in the UK, including a residency at the Leach Pottery; learning different styles of pottery before establishing his own studio in Bizen.

Kazuyamakes sculptures and vases featuring his distinctive spiralling marks, created with a technique inspired by a teenage love for breakdancing.
His work involves throwing a basic cylindrical form on a potter’s wheel, which is then followed by a process of carefully etching lines onto the surface, and then throwing it on the wheel again, thereby warping both the form and its motifs.

From 2015 to 2018, while teaching his skills and Japanese culture to students at Oxford University, he also absorbed the techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of modern Western art which he then began introducing into his own Bizen Pottery. Rahou, which means ‘spiral,’ is an outstanding technique expressing the beauty of centrifugal force in Bizen Pottery, and was inspired by his experience in the UK.
