


Basics of Wheel Throwing with Larger Amounts of Clay
Participants will learn how to center 3–5 kg of clay using the strength of the body.
You will practice alternating your hands vertically to steadily pull and raise the clay, and develop an understanding of the basic structure of jar making by forming a cylinder on the wheel.
Through this process, you will learn how to control large amounts of clay with stability and develop the centering skills that are essential in wheel throwing.
Transforming a Cylinder into a Jar Form
You will learn the process of expanding a cylindrical form into a jar shape.
Explore the balance and proportions of a jar, practice creating smooth curves, and form a foot ring base that will later be trimmed. Through this process, participants will learn how to develop a cylindrical form into a jar and understand the techniques required to create a stable jar structure.
Moon Jar Forming and Joining Process
You will create the upper and lower halves of a moon jar separately, then join the two forms using the traditional joining and paddling process, refine the joined area and shape the rim of the jar.
Through this process, you will learn the traditional method of constructing a large jar by joining two forms and develop an understanding of how to adjust and balance the overall shape.
Trimming the Foot and Finishing Process
You will learn how to trim the foot of the jar and practice the proper use of trimming tools to refine the foot of the moon jar achieving its form and balance. Through this process, you will learn how foot trimming helps control the weight and balance of ceramics and how finishing techniques enhance the overall quality of the piece.
